DARK SHADOWS
POEM
TITLE: DARK SHADOWS
BY: SHEKWOWOYILO ENOCH
As I walk to class every night
To Jack and Jack my life out
I'm faced with undefined traffic
Of lots and lots of people
Some sitting, some standing
Some in open, some hiding
Some chatting with one phone
Some making unending calls
As I walk to class every night
I see dark shadows
Many shadows in twos, in threes
And even sometimes more
Shadows of united beings
Shadows of companions
Shadows communing with each other
Shadows of opposite sexes
As I turn left and right
I see so many cars
Cars with one chance drivers
Cars with four-one-nine passengers
Some tricking each other
Some slaying each other
Some breaking hearts
Some puncturing souls
Some postponing the present
Some thwarting dreams
Every night is a night
Every night is a busy night
With the girls' hostel gate being the garage of many cars
Every available space is contested
Many drivers picking passengers
Some others dropping...
Every night is a night
Every night at BHU is a busy night.
Interesting. It is a free verse, expository poem, that brings to bare, one of the dangerous life styles among university students, with reference to a particular university in Nigeria.
